Republic of Panama

The "Two Star" flag of Panama.
Digging on the Panama Canal, linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, was completed on May 20, 1913. The first merchant navy ship to navigate the canal arrived in the Pacific on August 15, 1914. Use of the canal provided an alternate route to ships sailing from the Indian Ocean (Australia and British India) to the United Kingdom. It allowed the ships to avoid the Mediterranean Sea and the German U-boats there that hampered shipping during the war.
Panama declared war with Germany on April 7, 1917. Panama declared war with Austria-Hungary on December 10, 1917. Even though Panama declared war on Germany and Austria-Hungary, there is no reason to believe there was any active participation in the struggle.
